Solar Panels - In the U.S. city Morganton

MORGANTON - As gas prices soar and President George Bush says the U.S. needs to cut its dependence on oil, one couple in Morganton is doing their part. Molly Hemstreet and Francisco Risso had solar panels installed at their home and are now generating power for the city of Morganton. The system takes energy from the sun and feeds power to the city’s electrical grid.

Bill Poteat, owner of BRESCO, Ltd., installed the solar system in the couple’s backyard, and the system was connected to the city of Morganton’s electric grid.

The state has mandated that a certain percentage of power that power companies and co-ops produce come from renewable energy sources by the year 2021, Poteat said.

Dan Brown, the director of the city’s electric department, said Hemstreet and Risso’s home is the first one to produce “green power” for the city. The solar panels installed at the couple’s home generates 1.4 kilowatt hours per hour, Brown said. That is the equivalent of 1,400 100-watt light bulbs on at the same time, he said.
