Solar sprint cars coming to Clear Lake
CLEAR LAKE — The first-ever AEA 267-sponsored Solar Sprint Car race will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday at Lions Field in Clear Lake.
About 50 kids in grades 5-9 from six school districts will participate.
The small cars, made from kits purchased by the schools from the University of Northern Iowa Center for Energy and Environmental Education, are powered by solar panels.
Darrin Strike, science education consultant for Area Education Agency 267, brought the idea to North Iowa as a fun exercise to expand an already expanding awareness about alternative energy.
“In North Iowa, we have the growth of the wind energy and the biofuels industry,” he said. “I thought this was a good avenue, a way for kids to explore” other alternative energy sources.
